In November 2001, Campbell won the Cleveland mayoral election. She took office on January 1, 2002, becoming the city’s first female mayor.

Campbell was born on May 19, 1953, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Campbell attended Shaker Heights High School, and earned her undergraduate degree in American History from the University of Michigan. She subsequently earned a Master’s in Urban Studies at the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University.

In 2019, Campbell became the President and CEO of the United States Capitol Historical Society. Her company Jane Campbell Strategies provides strategic advice to business, government, nonprofit and philanthropic entities seeking to build strong and inclusive communities.
